STOP 1: Bob Colling/ Waddington

Profile10

The Collings/Waddington pond started out as an impulse one hot summer day in 2000 while shopping at Sam’s Club. The Sam’s preformed kit sat in the back porch for the next 15 months until I was encouraged by a friend to visit the Ulbrich’s water Gardens. After wandering through their creations I knew a much bigger free form water feature was the only way to go.

The resulting pond was started in early September 2001 and finished December 1 2001. It is 16 ½ feet long by 12 ½ feet and varies between 1 and 3 feet in depth. It is approx. 1800 gallons. A three-tiered, 4 foot high waterfall backs the pond with terrestrial planting areas on both sides and behind. It has 45 mil. EPDM liner with commercial pond underlayment beneath and is topped off with cut fieldstone. The pump is an Alita Pond Sweep PS710P skimmer with an 8 inch weir and a 24 inch Pond Sweep biofalls with a detachable waterfalls lip. The pond also has a bottom drain. There are 4-12 volt 20 watt submersible lights, six – 12volt 10 watts lights in sets of three and placed in the depressions at the base of the upper two falls.

The pond has a variety of comets and Shubunkin up to 12 inches in length. There are many varieties of water lilies and a wide variety of marginal’s along with submerged and floating plants.

The initial plants and fish were introduced to the new water feature in May 2002. The following summer the pond was shown as part of the July NFKPC Pond Tour.  Since that tour an extensive drip irrigation system has been installed around the pond and throughout the remaining gardens. This relatively inexpensive and easy to install system virtually waters every annual and perennial whether planted in the ground or hanging baskets. It has saved countless hours of watering and comes on automatically, watering several times a day if desired. One irrigation line even feeds directly into the pond to top off evaporated water.

As for pond related problems, aside from loosing most of the fish during the winter of 1004-2005 due to freezing over, the only other major situations encountered over the past six years have been two lengthy bouts of green water prior to installing a 40 watt Aqua Ultraviolet sterilizer with a dual wiper unit in may 2006. Since this addition the water remains crystal clear. Algae fix is added to the pond periodically to control string and other algae and other related forms.

The pond loves company! After the pond tour if you’d like a more detailed look at the drip irrigation system, give me a call and I’ll set up a date for a visit.

Happy Ponding!

Bob
