STOP 2: Pam & Gary Craig

ProfileCraig

Our pond is approx 22ft x 33 ft and contains about 14000 gallons.

The bottom contour is extremely irregular, allowing for shelves of various widths and depths, then slopes to a maximum depth of nearly 6ft.

The pond was constructed over a five year period beginning in 2000 with the water being added in 2005. It will never be finished.

Due to very shallow bedrock, we needed to fill the perimeter of the area to gain depth of water and elevation for the waterfalls. This process took five years due to the large volume of fill needed and the fact that settling was occurring ever spring. The top of the falls is approx. 9ft above grade.

Filtration is accomplished by a homemade “biofalls” constructed of lumber and lined with rubber. It is 4ft x 5 ft x 2.5 ft. The media is polyester matting and lava rock. It is fed by 2 Artesian ½ horsepower pumps, each rated at 7560 GPH and a Pondmaster 50 rated at 5000 GPH.

The filter box has two spillways, creating two waterfalls, one feeding a 50 ft stream bed. The other feeds a third waterfall.

The fish population consists of several dozen Goldfish, Shubunkin and Comets. They share water with Lilies, Taro, Yellow Irises, Dwarf Cattails and Water Hyacinth.

While there is a path o the upper parts of the water feature and you are welcome to explore. Parts of the path are rocky and steep… please be very careful.

As the shoulder of our road is very narrow, please pull into the driveway and park in front of the barn or garage.
