Erie County Fair 2002

Our group was once again actively involved in the Erie County Fair, which ran from August 8th to the 18th, with our pond outside of the Creative Arts building. Our special thanks go out to Gordon Ballard, who once again coordinated this activity, helped maintain the pond, developed the schedule of shifts, obtained passes for those of us who worked the exhibit, made frequent visits during the 11 day run of the fair, and helped gain publicity for the pond and our group.

The pond drew a large number of questions and comments frommany, many visitors who stopped by. It really looked great this year, based on club member activity in getting it ready for the season, earlier this summer. Once again, the Koi were loaned to us from the Fish Place. I don't know where our club would be without the generosity of the Mang family. When you go to the Fish Place, be sure to thank them on behalf of the club!

We kept hearing over and over again how beautiful/spectacular/gorgeous the pond was. Most were amazed it was not put in commercially, which gave many the interest to consider doing something on their own. That's what it's all about!  In fact we did not hear one single negative comment from any fair visitor during the entire 11 days, except one person's concern she shared with her companion as they walked past the pond, about ponds (in general) being a "West Nile mosquito breeding ground", which of course is reflective of a lack of understanding on her part.

As a direct result of the display this year, a number of people have completed applications to join our club, the farthest away being located in Pennsylvania! (I think that's even a little father away than Little Valley, isn't it?) These applicants will be submitted to the group at our September meeting for approval.
