Febuary 2003 Meeting

P1010021_crop

If you did not make the Febuary meeting, you really missed a treat, Michael Shadrack's talk on English gardening, with an emphasis on water gardens, including some Koi ponds (which he said he didn't have many slides on). The "Koi" slides showed the construction of a large, and I do mean LARGE, Koi pond, made out of cement. The cement ponds in England use hand-applied cement, not the spray on Gunnite we are more familiar with here. Quite a bit of work, to be sure, but the results were truly spectacular, especially with the long cement lined stream and multiple waterfalls we viewed.

Mike's presentation, with his dry British humor, evoked more laughter from the group, than I have heard in a very long time! If he ever gets tired of doing presentations dealing with plants and fish, he could consider stand-up comedy. He would be a natural!

During the course of the evening, Mike presented an idea to the group, to adopt as a sister club, his "tropical" fish club in London. I put tropical in quotes, as many of his club members maintain outdoor water gardens containing Goldfish and some Koi, in addition to maintaining beautiful, lushly planted indoor aquaria containing tropical fish, as well as Goldfish.

Our club unanimously agreed to his proposal. Once he returns to England, he will present this idea officially to his club. Our plans are to immediately begin to exchange club newsletters, and other information. When club members visit the sister club's cities, efforts will be made to provide tours of members homes/get togethers, etc. to our "brother & sister" visitors. This should be great fun, and provide some cross-pollination as well, something every group needs in order to prevent stagnation as we deal with the every day status quo.
