STOP 7: Jody and Randy Ferris

profileferris

After 23 years of caring for a pool it was time for a change. We had been on garden tours and noticed many ponds and decided that was something we could do. So late in the summer of ’05 we started to dig and finished our creation in October of the same year. After a few minor adjustments in the spring of ’06 it was time to run the water and start the garden.

Our pond is home to 3 shubunkins, 4 black goldfish, 4 goldfish and 3 frogs. The pond holds 1250 gallons of water and has a 10 inch deep shelf all around with two 24” x 24” shelvers located in the corners with the center being 36” deep.

We used a 45 ml. liner, a Pondmaster external pump which is rated at 4300 gph at a 5’ head. The filter falls is capable of holding both the pump outputs. Our skimmer has and 1800 gph Pondmaster pump. We also installed 6 20 watt lights to provide night time illumination.

All the rocks used to construct the pondscape were hand picked and hauled from Allegany County. A single boulder was used to create the 5 tiers of the water falls. Randy enjoys working the mechanics of the pond and caring for the aquatic plants, while Jody maintains the gardens that surround our back yard centerpiece. This is the second summer with the pond. We look forward to many years of enjoyment ahead of us.
