	NFKPC Pond Tour July 21, 2007


	STOP 9: Mike and Louise Metlak

The Metlak pond is about 10 years old, give or take a few! It started out with a pre-form pond the Michael dug out by hand with encouragement from me. We put in the waterfall and bio filter and got a handful of goldfish and tossed them in. We weren’t sure how they would winter over. We joined the NFKPC and enjoyed our pond.

The next year we won a pair of muddy Koi in a raffle and added them to the mix. They eventually turned into the most gorgeous bronze metallic one foot koi you ever saw! We added koi, fancy goldfish and pond plants. I thought we were done BUT Mike wanted a bigger pond.

Once again Mike dug hand over hand. He doubled the size of the pond to about 8’ x 8’. It took up half of the back yard. We got the liner, repositioned everything, put in 2 tons of rock and enjoyed. There were problems though. The pond leaked. We found out it was the waterfall leaking, but we kept at it.

Three years ago we closed the pond for the winter by once again laying old plastic windows over the top for insulation, putting in the air pump, and letting nature take control. We listened and the air pump worked. Imagine our surprise when spring came and we found out the air pump had separated and wasn’t pumping air into the pond. We lost all our fish. That summer we didn’t add anymore fish – just kept the waterfalls working.

Last summer Chris Wilkolaski offered to help Mike and myself out since we couldn’t do the pond justice any more. She came with Don Butterworth and Ed McKee and did a great job putting the pond back in order. In the process the found 4 LIVE fish!!! The hadn’t been taken care of in over a year! Needless to say we figured it was a sign and we are back in the pond business. I hope you enjoy our pond – it’s a work in progress!!
