STOP 4: The home of Mary O’Connor

profile3

This is my third attempt on a pond in my yard and this time it was done right! Brian Masterson of Landscape Innovations did the installation in June 2005 and there is very little work required to maintain a safe and healthy environment.

The pond holds approximately 2,800 gallons of water and is approximately 12 feet in diameter. The pond is powered by a 1/6 horsepower Pondmaster X Series pump, UV, and filter are located in the garage so they do not spoil the view of the pond. Once a week I clean the filter pad in the skimmer box and bi-monthly I clean the basket on the pump and rinse and backwash the filter.

There are wide shelves to hold water lilies. The central depth is 3 1/2 feet. There is a small but graceful waterfall which is planted with iris, floating hearts, parrots feather, and water hyacinths. The creek bed was specially designed to have three deep depressions to hold large plants that might tip over in strong winds. I have lotus, taro and umbrella palms located there along with water celery, water mint, sagittaria and other bog plants..

The pond is home to 9 koi, numerous frogs, dragonflies, toads, and the occasional birds that like to splash in the creed bed. I purchased two additional koi at the AKCA Seminar from Kloubeck Koi Farm, but they are currently in quarantine and will not be on display.
