Year constructed: 2003 Size: 10’W x 20’L x 4’ to 5’ deep Total Gallons: 6000 Filtration: Nexus 300 with EZ Pumps: 2 Sequence Series 750 UV: Emperor Aquatics 65 Watt Airppump: Sweetwater SL-88 Construction: 45mil EPDM Liner with concrete collar and cut slate Special Features: 2 Air Dome 4” Bottom Drains

We actually have 2 ponds, one being a water garden and the other being a formal koi with no plants and a formal look with the cut-slate top. The small pond is a transition pond, our fish are quarantined in our basement pond then brought out to the water garden, then to the koi pond. This is the way that we add new fish into our system.

The pond was started in August of 2001, with the pouring of the concrete collar after our return from Koi America. It was at that time we decided that our little water garden would not be large enough to keep koi in. In September of 2003 the liner was finally installed, with a marriage and the birth of our first child in between.

The pond is constructed with a 45 mil liner and a concrete collar around the top edge. The collar was the first thing installed, and then the dirt was removed by me with a mini-excavator. The pond has two 4” bottom drains that feed the Nexus, switching drains each day.

The water is then pumped with a sequence series 750 3600 gph at zero head, fed through the 65 watt UV then back to the pond via 2 side jets in the pond. On the other end of the pond the skimmer is powered by another sequence 750 series pump. Water is then fed into 2 55 gallon barrel filters and then into a large veggie filter (which will include a trickle tower later this summer) and then back to the pond.

The pond also features the air dome bottom drains, which run for 365 days a year. When the pond is shut down for the winter I unthread the air diffuser and install a 4’ extension into it, this keeps the air diffuser between 6” to 12” under the surface of the water. This method keeps a hole open in the ice during the frigid winter months.

The pond is home to about 19 various size koi. Having two young children cuts down on the quality of fish at this point, but I wanted the proper environment first. Better koi will come.

This pond is a result of determined, do it yourselfer, with the help of some of the other members of our club when it was time to install the liner.

Our home lacks curb appeal. Why should I have my neighbors enjoy it? We enjoy our backyard. .
