Aquatic and Terrestrial Plants with Asian Roots

As koi hobbyists, we go to great lengths to construct the perfect pond for our living jewels. Most of us want to keep an Asian theme with our garden to correspond with our Japanese koi. We go to great lengths to get the perfect rocks, bamboo fence or to build the classic tea house. What about the final aquascape and landscape? Ideally we would like to keep the Asian theme in our plantings as well. In his presentation, Larry Nau will highlight some of the Asian water plants and surrounding terrestrial plants that will make our Oriental creation complete. Waterlilies, lotus, dwarf conifers and Japanese maples plus other Asian treasures will all be highlighted. In addition there will be examples of some Western New York oriental gardens featured in this program.

Larry Nau attended the University of Rochester with degrees in Biology and Anthropology. I have worked for Pet World, Inc. since 1978 in the position of livestock buyer and manager. Lake Malawi beckoned in 1982 and I was fortunate to work with Dr. Ken McKaye on the biology and evolution of the cichlid fishes found in Lake Malawi. I built my first liner pond in 1986 in my orchid greenhouse. Later in 1992, I would build our 13,000 gallon koi pond on our current property. In 1996 I co-founded the Genesee Valley Pond and Koi Club in Rochester, New York. My wife Sherry and I opened Bergen Water Gardens and Nursery six years ago specializing in water plants, koi, pond supplies and dwarf conifers. I currently serve on the Board of Directors for The International Waterlily and Water Gardening Society and as Vice President of the Northeast Region of the American Conifer Society.

Chemicals in the pond & Trickle Tower Filtration

Dr. Roddy Conrad

DrRodConradD

Dr. Roddy Conrad started his chemistry career with a Ph. D. in Chemistry from the University of Southern California in 1967. He has been the lead technical resource in many fields of chemistry for two major chemical companies from 1967 until the present time, including synthetic fibers, plastics, and agricultural chemical manufacturing sites worldwide. His koi ponding hobby started in 1992 when his work finally allowed him to be at his West Virginia home for more than a week or two at a time. He has studied how chemistry can be applied to koi ponds and water gardens by running many of his own research experiments, taking careful note of cause and effect.

His talk at the 2006 AKCA seminar will give the average hobbyist a better understanding of when various chemicals can be helpful to koi pond and water garden maintenance issues, to reduce the health problems of the fish to zero by having outstanding water quality and the absence of fish parasites

Koi & Goldfish Surgery

Dr. Helen Roberts

roberts22

Helen Roberts is a 1990 graduate of the University Of Georgia College Of Veterinary medicine. Her first “official” fish course was Dr John Gratzek’s course at the University of Georgia. She has been keeping fish since she was very young as well as following her fly fisherman father around the world. She opened an ambulatory all fish practice in 2003-Aquatic Veterinary Services of WNY, in addition to 5 Corners Animal Hospital, a small and exotic animal practice she co-owns with Dr Karen Fischer in Orchard Park, NY.

Dr Roberts has spoken at several veterinary conferences on fish health including the American Veterinary Medical Association’s annual conference, the International Conference on Exotics, and the Eastern Fish Health Workshop. Dr Roberts has a special interest in surgery of pet fish. She also serves as the chairman of the Aquatic Animal Medicine Committee (AVMC) for the AVMA and as a consultant for the Veterinary Information Network (VIN). Dr Roberts is the veterinary representative on the Executive Board of SMART (Specialized Medical Assistance Response Team) for the western New York region.

She has two ornamental fish ponds in her yard that provide much needed relaxation!! vetmedteam.com

Pond side Triage

Dr. Erik Johnson

Dr_Johnson

I went to Veterinary School at University of Georgia. I found God while studying the rods-and-cones of the retina and then the diverse hepatocellular functions and structure of the liver. Oh, and the Platypus. Oh yeah, and the freakishly improbable exact-rainbow pattern on the scarlet macaw. I noticed these things.

I got my wife, and then my degree, in 1991.

I went intro practice and we made three kids, they're great: Katie, Lock and Jack.

I've written a few books. "Koi Health & Disease" is the first one, which was followed by a videotape to teach the "how to" techniques, it's called "Koi Health & Disease - The Techniques" - How original, right?

The second book is "Fancy Goldfish" I co-authored with Mr. Rick Hess and it was published by Weatherhill.

I am working on a third *and* fourth book right now. Not like I'm busy or anything.

I fly around the country and speak to groups of Koi people, and pond people, and water garden people. I hate flying but I love teaching these seminars. You can see what seminars are coming up by visiting Koivet.com. I offer a few "wet labs" each year, my favorite is where about fifty folks fly into Reno Nevada and we play in the science lab doing things like fish injections, anesthesia, biopsies and necropsies. I have taught seminars for the Associated Koi Clubs of America, Mid Atlantic Koi Club, and more recently, PondCollege every year.

I consult with AquascapeDesigns in Illinois because they reach so many people with the "lifestyle" of ponding. Some of the best people in the hobby work there.

I've written articles for almost every publication that occurs to the Koi hobby. It's boring to go through all that and no one ever reads all this stuff anyway.

I keep more fish, and more reptiles and more game roosters as pets than a person should probably keep, and I like food, and I like website design. I stopped drinking on September 29th, 2003. I haven't lost a single pound by doing that, but I am much more effective now. I work out four days a week and I have a 630 pound leg press and a 235 pound bench press. Nothing counts for me in the gym unless you can press it at least 10 times. I won't mind being dead, as long as I believe my family knows how much I love em.

Vaccines in Koi

DR Hugh Mitchell of Novartis

MitchellD1

We vaccinate our kids. We vaccinate our dogs and cats. Why aren’t we vaccinating our koi? Vaccination has become a standard tool in human and mainstream veterinary medicine for the prevention and/or risk reduction of diseases. It has been said that vaccination has no less than transformed modern society. With so many diseases putting our koi collections at risk, when are there going to be good vaccines for our prize fish?

Hugh Mitchell is a veterinarian with a Bachelor of Science in marine biology and a Master of Science in aquatic ecology. He has been practicing fish medicine his entire career and is well-known within the fish veterinarian community. He has given talks to associations, farmers, veterinarians and hobbyists all over the world. He helped start the American Veterinary Medical Association’s Aquatic Veterinary Medical Committee, is the current co-chair on the Fish Practitioner Committee of the International Association of Aquatic Animal Medicine, and the Vice-Chair of the Pacific Aquaculture Caucus. Over the past 10 years he has been heavily involved in the field of fish vaccinology, working for the leading companies in the field. He has even developed and produced his own fish vaccines while in private veterinary practice. Currently he heads Professional Services of Novaritis’ Aqua business in the US, and is responsible for helping fish farmers and hobbyists obtain fish health management tools. He works to provide proper use instruction, efficacy monitoring, and feedback to his company on uses and performance of various licensed or developing products.

Novartis is a pharmaceutical multinational with several important human and quality veterinary products (including “Program” (lufenuron) for fleas in dogs and cats). They are currently the world leaders in fish vaccine development and doses sold (primarily to fish farms around the globe) and have pioneered some exciting new technologies. They are seriously interested in developing improved vaccines for ulcer diseases in koi and breakthrough technology for KHV and SVC, including bringing other pharmaceutical-quality fish health products to the hobby.

In easy-to-understand lay-terminology, Hugh will tell us all about vaccines and their fascinating story: their use today in both terrestrial animals and fish; what they can do and cannot do; when they should and should not be used; what are the different types of vaccine technologies; a little bit of how a koi’s immune system works, and what we might expect for koi in the future. He will also sprinkle his talk with reminders on what fish health is all about and how we can all keep our koi healthy and beautiful.
