The 13th Annual Pond Tour of the NFKPC was held on Saturday, July 17 starting at 9:00 AM, rain or shine. It start at the home of Loren and Tracy Prucnal. As we gather at the first stop, coffee, juice and breakfast type nibbles were there to help wake us up for this early start to a full day of 10 ponds. As we did last year, the tour ended with a potluck picnic. This year it was at Greg and Diane Young's home.

Pond # 3 Shelp's Pond
We are pleased to have this pond on this year's tour, even though it was on last year's pond tour. You may ask why...well when you see it and compare the difference one year and a lot of work can make. You will answer your own question. This Pond which is actually two ponds connected holds a total of 15,000 gallons of water. The water starts its path at the top water falls which consists of three water falls that drop the water four feet into the first pond which is five and a half feet deep. The 16 or so Japanese Koi that live in this pond are prize winners, with great size and wonderful colors. You can view these Koi from a unique deck that cantilevers 5 feet over the pond, so yes you can watch the fish swim right under your feet. The water continues down a multiple set of streams and waterfalls a total of forty feet and another change in elevation of six total feet. The water then comes to the final lily pond. But don't let the name fool you this one is still large in size. The total system is filtered with a Aquidyne Bead filter / blower, a concrete settling chamber and pump that runs 9600 gallons per hour. If you like good fish, big ponds, and interesting layouts you will love this pond...sorry no goldfish in this pond.

Pond #4 Martin's
Randy Witt of Earthworks installed the pond three years ago. It is a 3800 gallon pond with two waterfalls, and a small connecting pond with a stream running into the big pond. The two waterfalls have 2 3,000 gallon per hr. pumps. The small pond has a 2,400 gallon pump. There are numerous waterlilies, bog plants and 13 koi fish. There are underwater lights as well as above lights and lights underneath each of the waterfalls. We also have a 4,000 gallon per hr. waterfalls in the adjoining backyard with 8 color fiber optic lights.

Pond #5 McKee's
Natural filtration system of a variety of water plants and a 2000 gallon pump maintain a small pond with a beautiful waterfall that via a stream flows into a larger pond. This 1500 gallons of water are home to 40 Koi, Comet Shubunkin and Sarasa Comet. With the help of my sons I installed the small pond initially as a water feature and then a few years later we installed the larger, deeper pond to over winter my fish. I have since deepened and elongated my small pond with the addition of a bog. Surrounded by flowerbeds, these ponds are nestled between a patio, curved brick walkway creating a natural setting.

Pond #6 Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens
The pond at the Erie County Botanical gardens is an irregularly-shaped gunnited pond, approximately 18 inches in depth. There are 2 circular areas approximately 4 feet in diameter, that are 4 feet in depth, apparently designed to hold Amazon lilies, although this is not confirmed. The water falls has a design issue which causes it to splash a great deal of water onto adjacent walkways, so it was bypassed earlier this year, by putting a wye into its 2 inch feedline, and feeding the stream directly with 2 sections of 1.5 inch diameter flex pipe. The filtration system was just replaced, and now consists of an Aqua Ultima II, AA200, which is designed for a maximum pond size of 20,000 gallons, and a fish load of 1225 pounds! The filter is powered by a 220 volt 1.5 hp Sea Flow SFP15 pump that pushes 130 GPM at 30 feet of head! Returns to the pond are via the stream, and a 2 inch underwater jet. The water feed into the filter originates from a single bottom drain. The pond is host to a massive green taro, numerous umbrella palms and other marginals. Fish include a number of various goldfish, and some Koi. Plans are to decrease the goldfish, and increase the Koi population.

Pond #7 Gordon and Everts
Jan and Greg have a small pond that they built themselves 3 years ago. It is about 1200 gallons with a 2 foot bottom fed falls that is fed by a skimmer box at the opposite end. The pond is built in three tiers to accommodate a variety of plants and to allow the ever changing goldfish population to winter over. The pond has many plants and is surrounded with a wide variety of perennials and annuals with an assortment of grasses planted in front. Some of their favorites are the annual purple fountain grass, the ice plants, the red crocosmia, Lucifer, and the cannas with which they have had good luck growing in the pond. This year they have added a lotus. Jan especially enjoys working with annuals in patio pots and window boxes. She is the chief gardener and the chief caretaker is Greg! The newest addition to the patio is a gargoyle with a flower pot on its head that was made by Jan's daughter.

Pond #10 Young's
We have 3 bodies of water on our 13-acre parcel of land. Pond #1 is a ½ acre natural earth pond, installed in 1984. Maximum depth is 12 feet, with a volume of over 1 million gallons of water! It was designed with a beach area that does not exceed 3 feet in depth, and features a water slide mounted to a scratch built dock. There is a floating dock in the center of the pond, to serve as an "island" of rest. The pond has twin aerators, and a floating scratch built fountain. The fountain uses a 1 hp Tsurumi submersible pump, a wooden frame (for buoyancy), a pvc nozzle, and 3 - 120 volt underwater lights for night viewing. The pond is home to loads of lilies, irises (including Louisiana), minnows, Perch, large mouth Bass, crawfish, frogs (that escape the Bass) and pond snails. This pond has no springs feeding it, relying instead on ground water runoff. To prevent the water level from dropping in the hot dry months, it is fed by a gravity flow system that uses about 400 feet of 1.25 inch diameter pvc, which has its origins in Pond #2, a 1/3 acre natural earth reservoir pond located in back of our woods, which is not stocked. Pond #3 is our 7,800 gallon water Koi pond/water garden. It is made from gunnite, commercially installed by Leisure Craft pools, and incorporates a single bottom drain, along with a skimmer. It is approximately 19 by 18 feet, and is 4 feet in depth, with a 1 foot deep plant shelf. The falls with its stream, along with the bog garden with its stream; are all liner based. This pond is home to 8 Japanese Koi, 5 lilies, and a number of marginal plants, located on shelves in the pond, as well as in the bog garden itself. We have 2 separate circulation systems. One uses a skimmer housed ½ hp Tsurumi pump which feeds an Aquadyne 4.4 bead filter, which in turn feeds the "biofalls". The bottom drain feeds a 1/3 hp Dragon pump, which feeds a long stream, which was designed to function as a trickle filter system. The stream drains into an adjacent 8 x 11 foot bog garden, which then flows back into the pond. A small electric fence surrounds the pond, to protect the Koi from the return of a mink that previously cleaned the pond of all its inhabitants in October 2002. All the landscaping around the pond was done by Diane and Greg Young.
